Basic Sciences

Space Research Center, (CINESPA, for its acronym in Spanish)

It promotes and develops high-level scientific research in astronomy, astrophysics, space and planetary sciences, as well as the study of planet Earth using space technology. It offers information services of the cosmic weather and real-time information of GOES 12 satellite imagery, weather forecast model products and weather bulletins.

Objectives

  • To promote and develop high level scientific research in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space and Planetary Sciences.
  • To promote scientific collaboration through programs, projects or agreements with scientific and academic centers, institutions, national and international observatories.

Main functions

  • To promote and develop high level scientific research in different areas of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Science and Planetary Sciences through research projects
  • To produce scientific publications and didactic material for scientific dissemination.
  • To collaborate closely with the Academic Master’s Degree in Astrophysics, Physics and Atmospheric Sciences.
  • To coordinate and organize short courses, workshops, symposia, conferences, seminars, and scientific congresses about topics related to the research developed at CINESPA.
  • To promote and develop activities of social outreach and scientific dissemination in the fields of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Science, and Planetary Sciences.
  • To promote the development of new branches of Observational Astronomy and Radio Astronomy.
  • To provide advice to public and private institutions and serve as a reference center in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Science and Planetary Sciences.

  • Provision of the Chirripó Cluster for scientific research.
  • National and international scientific seminars and conferences in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Science and Planetary Sciences
  • Night observation at the San José Planetarium
  • Advice on telescopes at the San José Planetarium
