Research Center in Geological Sciences, (CICG, for its acronym in Spanish)

It is a multidisciplinary research scientific unit dedicated to the study of the geological processes that have given origin to the planet and continue modifying it. This is to provide society with the necessary inputs for an adequate management of geological resources, territory and risk.

Objectives

  • To promote and support scientific studies about the history and characteristics of the different geological environments.
  • To perform scientific and technical studies in all branches of Geology.
  • To research the processes of internal and external geodynamics in order to contribute to the knowledge and improvement of management and risk reduction systems
  • To relate the research activities, its methods and results, to the teaching experience of different academic units, so that research and teaching are integrated for a better academic education of the student, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • To carry out programs and activities of Social Action with the purpose of benefiting society with the achievements in research
  • To promote multidisciplinary, transdisciplinary and intradisciplinary research together with national and international institutions

  • There is a specific project that allows to offer services in several modalities in two particular subjects. The CICG has two specialized laboratories that can provide the repetitive and technical services covered by the project 8
  • Geophysical laboratory:
  • The Exploration Geophysics Laboratory of this Research Center allows the application of diverse methodologies of exploration for geological, hydrogeological, archaeological, engineering, forensic, and pedological purposes, among others
  • Currently, the different techniques can be applied:
  • Electromagnetic methods: with the application of the EM-38 equipment of the company Geonics, it is possible to map the electrical conductivity of the soil. Nowadays, the purchase of a Georadar of the type Geopar GPR Subsoil of the mark OK is being process
  • Electrical methods: with the application of the SYRCAL R1 equipment from the company Iris Instruments, Vertical Electrical Probes and Tomographies are carried out, both of Electrical Resistivity of the soil and of Induced Potential. There is also the Ohm
  • Seismic Methods: Geometrics’ 24-channel Stratavisor equipment allows the prospecting of seismic of refraction, reflection and surface waves, among others
  • Magnetic Methods: The cesium vapor gradiometer, Mag-Mapper G-858, allows both the total magnetic field and the magnetic gradient to be measured in vertical and/or horizontal position
